Scene Thirteen

Fin found Ermoor’s capital city of Arilia almost as dull and drab as the rest of the planet, but he was willing to admit that it compared badly with Crater City. Most places did. Dowager aunt standing next to a rowdy teenager with green hair. Not that he’d ever done anything like that. All those pictures were doctored after the fact.

But the walk was doing him good. Not nearly as hot. And it let Tessa have a chat with Auntie while everybody else was out doing stuff. Whatever stuff you did when you didn’t have to stay aboard a starship in port.

He was beginning to appreciate doing more than just flying, though he would deny that if pressed. Trains and starships, that was him.

Delivering the mail was just one of those things they did to pay bills. He adjusted the heavy satchel slung across his hip and looked around. Buildings mostly made of brick and stone here, rather than steel shipping containers slathered with sand and oil. Dowagers and punks.

Sidewalks and cobblestone streets, though he could see an aircar, a truck on inflated wheels, and two teenagers on horseback, just in the next four blocks.

Most people were on foot. Healthier, that. Plus sunlight on a nice day.

Fin found the right address and pushed open a glass and steel door. Foyer, with polished marble underfoot. Wood counter separating the room into two pieces. One person eyeing him suspiciously from the far side.

“Help you, sir?” the man asked as Fin turned and ambled that direction.

Fin pulled the bag around front and held it out.

“Mail delivery,” he said. “Mostly from Newhall, but a few bits from Orvan. Last Stand landed yesterday afternoon.”

“And you are?” the fellow pressed, arch and superior.

“Tessa’s husband Fin,” he nodded.

“Oh,” the man nodded with sudden understanding. “Mr. Barton.”

“Fin,” he corrected, handing him the satchel and watching the man dump things out on the counter.

“Where are you headed next, Mr.—Fin?” the postal clerk asked in a brighter voice.

“Urham from here,” Fin said simply. “Couple of other stops, then back to Newhall. You’ll want to call Tessa on the comm for exact details. I’m just the delivery boy today.”

“Excellent, sir.” The man handed Fin back the satchel. “Thank you. I will contact her today and get an itinerary. We have some mail for Newhall cached up, but knowing that Last Stand is in town will likely bring more. Thank you.”

“Thank you,” Fin nodded, heading back out.

The sun felt good on his back.
